How to prepare for your newborn session

A newborn photography session is a special way to capture your baby’s first moments, but many parents wonder how to prepare. Don’t worry—I make the process as easy and stress-free as possible! Here are a few simple steps to help ensure a smooth session.

1. Keep Baby Comfortable

A well-fed, sleepy baby makes for the best photos! Try to feed your baby right before the session to encourage sleepiness. Also, dress them in loose clothing to avoid red marks on their skin.  I'll be getting the baby in just a diaper to wrap baby up for our wrapped session, or in a diaper for our unwrapped session.  A baby honestly doesn't need that many layers of clothes, so keep it light!

2. Create a Cozy Environment

Newborns love warmth, so we’ll keep the room at a comfortable temperature. If your session is at home, turning up the heat, or if you are in the more hot parts of  Maui, turning down the AC slightly or using a space heater can help keep baby happy. In my home studio, I turn off my AC and use only open windows and a ceiling fan if it's too warm.

3. Bring the Essentials

For studio or in-home sessions, bring extra diapers, wipes, a pacifier, and a blanket. If you have a special outfit or sentimental item you’d like included, feel free to bring that too!  Bring enough milk and diapers for baby, even if you anticipate your session to last an hour.  When we have all the essentials on hand, it's easier to keep baby comfortable.

4. Relax and Enjoy

Newborn sessions are calm and unhurried. If your baby gets fussy, we take breaks as needed. Please don't stress about the time passing.  My goal is to create a relaxed experience while capturing beautiful, timeless moments of your little one. But at the end of the day, the baby is the boss, so we will go with the flow that the baby sets.  If the baby needs rocking, multiple feedings or diaper changes, please don't worry about it, and keep baby relaxed and comfortable.

5. Siblings and family

It's an exciting time for the rest of the family to be involved with the photo session too!  The family photos will be done either at the beginning, or at the very end.  So just be prepared to entertain the rest of the family while I work with the baby.  This helps make for a smooth session, so I am able to capture all the images for your gallery.  Bring and have snacks and entertainment for little ones, as well as yourself!

With these tips, you should be well prepared for your newborn session.
