Sunset VS Sunrise Which session should I book?
Sunset and Sunrise sessions are both options for beach photography. But the question is, which session should you book?
Sunrise sessions are marked with quiet beaches, smooth sand, and way fewer people. We can have a big portion of the beach to ourselves (I only photograph at beaches I know don't usually have bookings and elopements). Jagged lava rock and smooth sand with a glass like ocean are all common elements of your session. Sunrise sessions offer soft and somber morning light, and begins when the sun rises. The sunrise sessions in Kihei or Wailea are perfect for little ones who are still jet-lagged, or those who want to make sure they are able to snag a seat after the session to their favorite restaurant.
Sunset sessions are dramatic and beautiful. We chase the sunlight and play in the water. Everyone is probably awake and happy to be at the beach, and the sessions end when the sun sets, so it's very predictable, timing wise. There are certainly more people at the beach and the ocean is stirred up more. That also means there are more footprints in the sand. While kids might get a little fussy towards the end of the session, I highly encourage you to allow your children to get in the water and get dirty during the session.
So it really depends on what you are looking for and your needs.
Here are some pros and cons for each type of session:
SUNRISE:
+few people
+empty beaches
+smooth sand and glasslike water
+soft, cool, dreamy, somber lighting
+good for young kids (who might be jet-lagged)
+less haze, crisper air, morning mist
+less distractions
+quiet, calm, serene energy
-early time (less time to get ready)
-not many clouds (gradient sky in the back instead of dramatic)
-access to some beaches are limited (so I provide a list of beaches that are accessible early morning)
SUNSET:
+ more wave action, movement in the water
+warm, rich, dramatic, golden, vivid colors
+more predictable sunset time
+clouds playing with sky, dramatic and colorful sky
+more daytime hours to get ready
+easy and full access to beach and parking during sunset
- more people, foot traffic, footprints, umbrellas, etc
-more beach activity and debris
-young kids may get fussy during the end of the session
-more haze
